Cyclists biking on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer

Summer in Rocky Mountain National Park is nothing short of spectacular. Crisp alpine air, towering peaks, and a wild landscape teeming with life make it one of the most unforgettable places to visit during the warmer months. From cascading waterfalls and scenic trails to jaw-dropping overlooks and close encounters with wildlife, the summer season invites you to experience the Rockies at their best, and at Black Canyon Inn, we’re just minutes from it all.

Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is a summer haven for outdoor lovers. Over 300 miles of hiking trails wind through meadows of wildflowers, forests echo with the calls of elk and songbirds, and crystal-clear lakes reflect the grandeur of the surrounding peaks. Popular hikes like Emerald Lake and Sky Pond deliver high reward for your effort, with breathtaking scenery at every turn.

If you prefer a slower pace, Sprague Lake and Bear Lake offer short, flat trails perfect for a sunrise stroll — and you might spot some of the park’s amazing wildlife like a moose if you’re lucky. No matter your skill level, there are plenty of hikes to enjoy during summer in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Scenic Drives

No visit is complete without a drive up Trail Ridge Road, which climbs above 12,000 feet and offers panoramic views of the Continental Divide. Typically open from late May through mid-October (weather permitting), it’s one of the most scenic byways in the country.

For a more rugged experience, take the one-way Old Fall River Road. This dirt road winds past waterfalls, alpine tundra, and incredible wildlife viewing spots. Prepare yourself for a winding and steep drive, but one that’s chock-full of beauty. Like Trail Ridge Road, Old Fall River Road is closed seasonally.

Paddling & Peddling

There are many different ways to explore Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer. It is only during the warm season that paddling opportunities are available at a select few lakes. Sprague Lake is ideal for kayaking or paddleboarding in calm, reflective waters. No motorized boats are allowed.

If you’d prefer to stay on land, hop on a bike. People travel from far and wide just to cycle on Trail Ridge Road. This is the second highest climb by bike in the U.S., so as you can imagine, it is quite the workout. However,  the incredible mountain views are worth every pedal stroke. For a more relaxed ride, pedal along sections of Bear Lake Road or explore the paved roads near Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park, where the terrain is gentler and wildlife sightings are common.
